Beautiful and enjoyable

Sardinia has treasures of inestimable value and dazzling beauty: fabulous beaches kept safe inside protected marine areas, or 'locked' within military zones, that can be used but with limitations.

Sardinia – the queen of the 2018 summer

The coastal destinations that received the top award, 5 Sails for environmental protection and the quality of services, include Baronìa di Posada and the Tepilora park, which takes the first spot in Italy, followed by the splendid coastline of Chia (Domus de Maria). The guide's top ten, a “compass” to help people find their way among the coastal destinations, there is the incomparable coast of Baunei. Planargia di Bosa and the north of Gallura have also received awards.

The most popular beaches? In Sardinia, of course

At the top of the world’s most beautiful beaches, dominating Italy’s top 10: Sardinia’s shores are once again a sure bet in 2025, confirmed by rankings from leading travel sites. Among the most prestigious is The World’s 50 Best Beaches, where a panel of 1,000 travel experts and influencers crowned one of Sardinia’s eastern gems, Cala Goloritzé, with the gold medal. No less significant is the recognition from TripAdvisor users: here, the Island reigns supreme, with four Sardinian beaches ranked among Italy’s top ten—and three of them in the top four.

The queen of the 2019 summer

Sardinia dominates the ranking of coastal areas awarded with 5 Blue Sails (maximum score) for environmental sustainability and quality of services. On the podium the Baronìa goes up with the Tepilora park, third in 2019 and voted first last year; in fourth place is Chia (Domus de Maria), chosen as the world premiere two years ago; fifth is the coast of Baunei and the seventh is the Planargia di Bosa. Just outside the top ten the north of Gallura. While among the coasts awarded with 4 Sails there are other ten Sardinian districts: Pula, Gulf of Angels, Costa Verde, Gulf of Oristano, Sulcitan coast and islands, Asinara, Maddalena archipelago, Gulf of Olbia and Tavolara Gulf, Gulf of Orosei and the Ogliastra coastline. Two 'plastic free' locations: Carloforte and Domus de Maria.

Villages of the spirit

An invitation to recollection and contemplation in ideal places for physical and mental regeneration, places where hospitality is considered sacred. Seven 'devoted' places that exude a deep sense of spirituality, steeped in religious devotion, where important spiritual figures were born and lived. Each has its own naturalistic and cultural-historical peculiarities, a destination for travellers who are well aware that they are living intimate experiences that will leave a mark. Each village offers different emotions but with common denominators: enchanting landscapes, age-old traditions, artistic masterpieces, archaeological monuments, excellent craftsmanship and typical dishes.

Fairy houses, in the heart of Sardinia

An underground universe, camouflaged in the landscape of the Sardinian countryside, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2025. Over 3500 domus de Janas are scattered throughout the island, an expression of the funerary rites of people who lived five thousand years ago, and then reused in later periods. Using only stone pickaxes, these people dug and shaped the hard rock to create underground tombs where they laid the dead and 'returned' them to the Mother Goddess, a divinity attested to by the discovery of hundreds of votive statues.

The name of these 'artificial' caves derives from the ancient belief, spread by popular legends, that they were the homes of tiny fairies, the Janas, who wove golden threads in the moonlight and watched over children's sleep. Sacredness and rituals drove the pre-Nuragic men to dig into the rock and decorate the 'rooms' that housed their loved ones, who 'slept' in the womb of mother Earth while waiting for the regenerative journey to the afterlife.

The domus are carved into isolated boulders or grouped in necropolises on rocky ridges. There are many types: pit, oven, chamber and with dromos. Many were built in the likeness of the houses of the living, equipped with double-pitched ceilings, hearths, columns, plinths, basins and false doors, symbols of the passage to the afterlife. Of the thousands discovered, more than 200 retain carved, engraved and painted decorative motifs, largely symbolic, such as cattle heads, bull horns and spirals. All the domus de Janas, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, exude a magical charm.
