It opens in a crescent shape next to the beach of Simius, but it doesn’t look out of place at all next to its more famous ‘big sister’. The beach of is Traias is set inside a bay. Its sides are bordered and protected from the northwesterly wind by two small rocky promontories, at the foot of which other short stretches of beach with smooth pebbles emerge. The vegetation is low and shaped by the wind, almost reaching the beach and giving is Traias a wild appearance, despite its closeness to the residential area of Villasimius, just four kilometres away.
The captivating colours of the beach will remain impressed in your mind: the fine white sand, the blue and emerald green sea, the dark rocky outcrops and the Mediterranean greenery around and the island of Serpentara in front. It is about 150 metres long and 25 metres wide on average, with a seabed sloping gently out to sea. The areas around the cliffs to the sides are a destination for diving and snorkelling lovers, thanks to the variety of fish that populate this stretch of coast, included in the marine protected area of Capo Carbonara.
In the opposite direction from Simius, the ‘city’ beach of Villasimius, one kilometre long and washed by the crystal clear, turquoise sea, you will find another charming little beach, smaller than is Traias: Porto Luna, also sheltered from the northwesterly wind and enriched with rich Mediterranean vegetation. Here, however, the sand is golden and medium grained.
White sand and a transparent sea, reflecting shades of turquoise and emerald green, characterise the entire marvellous and renowned Simius coast. Around Capo Carbonara, punctuated by small cliffs, are Porto sa Ruxi, Campus and Campulongu, where the scenery is enriched by white dunes. Near the modern tourist port, you’ll find the beach of Riso, which owes its name to the unusual texture of sand, similar to grains of rice. To the east of the promontory, nature has painted masterpieces in Porto Giunco and punta Molentis, where there are also hints of pink from the granite of the nearby cliffs in the sand.
A few steps away from the beaches, you can combine sea and archaeology. In fact, you can admire traces of the past near the coast: a short distance from is Traias you’ll find the necropolis of Accu is Traias, with around thirty tombs of various types, some still intact: in graves, in urns and enkytrismos, meaning inside amphorae, often used for children. Grave goods were found inside them, in an excellent state of preservation.
