Sardinia, magic moments

The force of wild nature and the fascination of the sea live here, along with a glamorous lifestyle and the magnetic charm of ancestral cultures. It is easy to think of Sardinia when you want to satisfy whatever desire that comes to mind concerning original and memorable locations where you can celebrate weddings and anniversaries or renew your vows. In seaside resorts they are celebrated everywhere, on the beaches and on top of cliffs, at the foot of lighthouses and coastal towers and even on the islets visible from the coast. You will surprise your guests even more if you say “yes” in the surreal silence of the mining villages or villages once abandoned and now reborn to a new life, in the delightful country churches scattered through the void of poetic primordial landscapes or in the presence of Nuragic palaces and sacred wells, not by chance built in places full of positive energy, a big plus left as a dowry by ancient people for your special moments.

Until the last ray of sunshine

The weather is mild and the sun is shining, while the beaches gradually become more and more deserted, with no traces of overtourism at all. At the end of the summer, the dreamy nature of Sardinia can catch its breath and win back its spaces. It is the best time to seduce even the most skeptical ones, with beaches that become real private rooms. They are hidden between rocks that look like works of art created by the wind and the rough seas, and, behind them, candid dunes of sand and lagoons coloured by the pink of the flamingos. There are still lots of mild days and hours of light to engage in exciting hikings, to trek along paths that lead to the most secluded stretches of coastline. Or maybe boarding a minicruise to admire sea oasis sheltering lonely islands: Tavolara, Asinara, Mal di Ventre, dei Cavoli and the outstanding archipelago of la Maddalena, where the 'most beautiful among the beauties' shines, Budelli.

You write “September”, but you read “sea”

So far, there has been an explosion of presences and entertainment on Sardinia’s beaches. Now, however, the more seductive sea is making its début and the season will have a sensational finale. Once the hot, crowded intoxicating days become a thing of the past, you can enjoy the beautiful sea from sunrise to sunset, under the sun and in the water, still as warm as during the summer. And now, in the newly-found silence of the immense expanses of sand and secluded coves, all you will hear are the waves breaking on the shore and the vibrato sound of the cicadas perched throughout the juniper and myrtle scrubland. You can’t escape the happy combination of hints of tropical nature and coarse Mediterranean authenticity: this is the Sardinian sea in autumn.

Discovering thousands of years of history on foot

Slow steps, curious eyes filled with splendour and a serene soul eager for emotions... this is the way to walk through the little villages and the unspoilt nature of Sardinia, lost in an atmosphere of purity and relaxation, far from crowds and confusion. It is the intimate and authentic face of a legendary land, where you can clearly see the material and other traces left behind by historical events and by religious men that, after hundreds or even thousands of years, continue to arouse the intense devotion of walkers, pilgrims and visitors to those places. Legends, traditional rituals, knowledge linked to nature, art and food inevitably intertwine with the ancestral evidence left behind. In the wake and in the footsteps of saints and martyrs, ancient and modern, you will discover situations where past and present coexist in a time that seems to be standing still and you will be welcomed by communities for whom hospitality is sacrosanct.

The Santa Barbara Cammino mine trail, history and devotion

The tower, site of the martyrdom of Saint Barbara, is the symbol of and marks, with yellow on blue, the 500 km route of the Santa Barbara mine Cammino. It is to her that the miners prayed before going down into the darkness of the pits, well aware of the grave risks and hardship. Yet they loved and felt the natural beauty and spiritual charm of these places as their own, proud of the hard, sometimes inhumane labour that was their only hope for a future for their families. The mine also employed women and children, in food halls or in post-extraction activities. Hundreds of people lived in communities in the villages that sprung up around the pits and tunnels, self-sufficient islands in a wild and spectacular setting, with emergency medical aid, schools, shops and, of course, chapels that were always open to welcome the heartfelt appeals of the miners to their patron saint.

Great beauty travels on the Green train

“After a long pull, we come to a station after a stretch of loneliness. Each time, it looks as if there were nothing beyond — no more habitations. And each time we come to a station.” This is the poetic description, aboard the locomotive that is today the Trenino Verde (Green Train) of Sea and Sardinia, the project dedicated by David Herbert Lawrence on his 1921 voyage to Sardinia. Following in his footsteps a century later, travellers from all over the world are attracted to this unique railway line, derived from the ‘old components’, designed and constructed between the late 19th and early-20th centuries. An Italian excellence, a unique experience comprised of four trails currently totalling 163 kilometres. The lines, never abandoned, have been preserved and protected, connecting the coasts and hinterland - and crossing bridges and tunnels -, integrating such with excursions to the lakes by boat, trekking, cycling and horse riding.
