Siurgus Donigala

A sneak preview
The territory of Siurgus Donigala is situated in the historic area of the Trexenta, a low-hilled area in the southern part of Sardinia. It borders to the north with the territories of Mandas and Orroli, to the south with the territory of San Basilio, to the east with that of Goni and to the west with the lands of Gesico and Suelli.
The area where Siurgus Donigala lies, has been inhabited since the Nuraghic Age, as shown by the various nuraghi found in the area. The most important of these is “Su Nuraxi,” in whose donjon a Byzantine burial complex has recently been brought to light, which is of certain artistic interest.

During the Middle Ages, the name of the village was “Seùrgus”, a toponym that may derive from the Sardinian “Su Burgu”, "the bitter oak", or it could be of Byzantine origins, for the affinity with “Xiurgus”, the name of a monastery on Mount Athos.

Why visit Siurgus Donigala?
The Churches of San Teodoro, of probable Byzantine origins and the Churches of Santa Susanna and San Francesco can be admired in all their glory in the historic centre . A visit to the splendid Mulargia lake is also recommended. It was built during the forties and is the fourth largest artificial lake for water capacity in Europe.

Another recurring important and particularly curious event at Siurgus Donigala is "Is Bagadius", the Feast of the Bachelors, which used to be celebrated during the second week of October on the occasion of the Feast of the “Madonna dei Sette Dolori”. The feast is organised by a group of single young people and includes a solemn community dinner, with roast meat, decorated bread and macaroni with “ragu” (meat and tomato) sauce. At the end of the ceremony, the young people and their families used to share out the consecrated bread, kept as a talisman against sickness and misfortune.
