Mamoiada is one of the most famous villages of the Barbagia mountains, a fame connected mainly with the Carnival, animated by the Mamuthones and Issohadores masks.
The Mamuthones walk through a solemn parade, similar to a religious procession, at times also similar to a dancing one. They are twelve, as the months of the year, dressed with ovine hide and their face covered by "sa bisera" (the pear-wood mask), and walk in two parallel rows at a rhythmic pace, causing the heavy bells they carry on their shoulders to resound. The Issohadores, next to them, jumping and moving with more agility, give the rhythm and with sudden jumps throw the lace ("sa soha") upon the watching crowd.
Autunno in Barbagia is one of the yearly opportunities for Mamoiada to show visitors the treasures of its land, from archeology to gastronomy, to polyphonic music, to the charming parade of Mamuthones.
