A sneak preview
The marine area in the north east of Sardinia goes from Capo Ceraso, to the south of Olbia, to Punta l’Isuledda, to the south of San Teodoro, and includes the islands of Tavolara and Molara, the cliffs of Molarotta and the coastal territories from Capo Cesareo to Capo Coda Cavallo. Tavolara is a limestone parallelelepiped at over 560m in height, where the ecosystem has been kept intact thanks to the difficulty of approach which over the decades has left it free from anthropic developments. Species of rare beauty can be found here such as Erodium coricum, a variety of geranium, and Asperula deficiens, which only grows on this island. From its highest point, Punta Cannone, the view is spectacular and unforgettable.
Different from the Island of Tavolara, Molara is easily reached by boat. It is covered by dense vegetation bathed by watery slopes that flow out of various springs. The cliff of Molarotto, however, is distinguished by its abundance of bird life, like the common shag and the Eleonora’s gull.
At the foot of Monte Pedrosu lies a beach coloured by the granite cliffs and where one can see the famous Roccia della Tartaruga (the Tortoise Rock), a rock which evokes the form of this turtle. The waters of the reserve, with underwater scenes of deep blue, can be explored with guided dives in various places. For example, to the south of Tavolara, in Teddja Liscia, where Astree , red starfish, groupers, but also yellow gorgonia appear among the ravines and underground passages in the limestone blocks. Among the coastal tracts, the beach of La Cinta, around 5km long, covered in brilliant white sand and immersed in the scents of juniper, rosemary and lentisk, is considered as a corner of paradise, unique in the world.
How to get there
Tavolara island is reached by sea leaving from Porto San Paolo. Private boats from Olbia and Golfo Aranci also operate throughout the summer months.
