In the area of Sarrabus there are the humid areas of the lagoons at Notteri, Colostrai and Feraxi, the Mouth of Flumendosa and the lagoon at San Giovanni.
The lagoon at Notteri expands on the furthest south-east side of Sardinia, in the municipality of Villasimius. It has no emissaries and flows into the sea, therefore it only fills up with rainwater, reaching shallow depths. Flamingos spend their winters here.
In the territory of Muravera, there are the lagoons of Colostrai and of Feraxi, situated in a lush pine wood which continues up to Torre delle Saline. They originated from the stagnation within the mouths of the rivers Picocca and Corr’e Pruna at the end of the 1940s, when the ending stretch of the river Picocca was diverted into a depression behind the dunes near the beach of Cristolaxeddu.
The water here is shallow. However, there is rich vegetation around, as well as numerous birds like the common species of coots, ducks, cormorants, but also rare avocets, together with Kingfishers, black-winged stilts, flamingos, which are very rare in the eats coast of Sardinia.
People have also caught sight of white storks in the area. Going back up along the eastern coast, there is the Mouth of Flumendosa built in the 1950s, together with the near lagoon of San Giovanni. In their waters we find little grebes, coots, moorhens, water rails and mallards.
