The territory extends around the main town of the province of Nuoro, that rises on a granite highland dominated by the Monte Ortobene and surrounded by the valleys of the Isalle and the Rio Oliena. Its name derives from "Nugoro", the name that the city was registered as back in the 12th century.
To gaze onto the primitive beauty of the territory all you have to do is climb onto the Ortobene, from where it is possible to embrace with a single glance the whole area, with its peaks of white limestone and grey granite, reddish volcanic rocks, expanses of brush, living forests and narrow valleys, that have allowed the preservation of the historical, natural and cultural equilibrium and thus creating a fascinating world balancing between the past and present. The main wealth of the territory is in its natural environment, one of the green lungs of the Mediterranean, where a rich and variegated fauna takes its home, and moreover, habitat of the Sardinian mouflon. Of particular interest is the great handicraft tradition that covers a number of different sectors: the classic chests carved in walnut and chestnut, the weaving of the rough woollen cloth typical to Sardinia, of carpets and blankets, the manufacture of trinkets in gold, silver and filigree. Noteworthy are the numerous feasts that throughout the year offer the opportunity for the tourist to come into close contact with the local customs, to admire beautiful traditional costumes, one of the characteristic attractions of the territory.
