The territory of Monteacuto owes its name to the construction, in medieval times, in the 13th century, of the judicial castle build to accommodate the giudicessa Adelasia of Torres and her bridegroom Ubaldo Visconti.

Its landscape is characterised by the harmonious joining of high ground and flatland, such as Chilivani, further enriched by the presence of the Romanesque rural church of Sant'Antioco di Bisarcio, that was constructed with alternating black and red trachyte.
Dealing with the prehistoric epoch, Montacuto has the precious inheritance of the culture of its main town, Ozieri, autonomously developed between the Neolithic and laccolitic eras (around 3000 B.C.) whose finds are on display in the archaeological and ethnographic museum of Ittireddu, a small town that preserves the church of Santa Croce, its first plan dating back to the 7th century, then readapted in medieval times.
There are a high number of caves in the territory, such as that of San Michele, presumed as a place of cult, and also there is the domus de janas, still in the Ozieri area, the nuraghi of Sa mandra, of Sa Giua, and of Funtana and the giants’ tombs; the Roman era is signalled by the presence of bridges, but also a series of finds held in the archaeological museum of Ozieri, among which of particular interest is a collection of coins from the different ages: Punic, Roman, Byzantine and medieval.

The territory also includes the church called Nostra Signora di Castro, in the municipality of Oschiri, situated in close proximity to Coghinas lake, an example of Romanesque art dating back to the second half of the 12th century, that gives the landscape a display of red due to the colour of the trachyte used in its construction.
