Marghine takes its name from the relatively small mountainous chain, ideally connected to the nearby chain of the Goceano, characterised today by the presence of small towns. The landscape is rather variegated and offers many possibilities to go on archaeological and rural excursions in the discovery of uncontaminated localities and environments. The territory, in fact, preserves intact an exceptional environmental patrimony: the presence of the griffon vulture, one of the last colonies present in the Mediterranean basin, is a clear example of the naturalistic value of this area.

The area also has the highest concentration of pre-nuragic and nuragic monuments in the whole island. Among the various sites, we can mention the area of the Tamuli nuraghe near which three giants’ tombs and six sacred conical form stones are found; the necropolis of Filigosa, where the domus de janas are flanked by the nuraghe of Santa Barbara, with its four lateral towers; and then near Birori, we have the giants’ tombs of Palattu and Lassia.

Even though they do not have monumental buildings, the towns of the Marghine guard small architectural jewels such as the Romanesque church of San Bachisio in Bolotana, restructured with decorations in Aragonese style, the Aragonese church in red trachyte of Santa Maria degli Angeli, again in Bortigali, the small Romanesque church of San Pietro in Sindìa and the church of San Pantaleo which dates back to the 16th century in Aragonese Gothic style in Macomer, the ideal chief town of Margine.

A strong local culture has maintained intact a patrimony both of ancient handicraft traditions, through particularly sought after local productions, such as the reed and asphodel baskets present all around the small towns, and gastronomic traditions with old world flavours, accompanied by renowned locally produced wines.
