The area of the Iglesiente, that extends to the north of the valley of Cixerri and borders to the north-east with the Campidano, has a vaguely triangular form. It is a territory in which nature and history pulsate uncontested.
The nature is uncontaminated in the mountainous areas as in the valleys bathed by rivers that sometimes plummet with spectacular falls, in the deep caves as on the coastline, characterised by wide beaches, among which Piscinas stands out, with its metaphysical sand dunes or the splendid cove of Masua, that looks onto the calcareous crag of Pan di Zucchero.
The history of man is testified by the numerous archaeological and historical-artistic finds dotted about the territory: from the temple of Antas near Fluminimaggiore to the nuraghe Domu de s’orcu near Domusnovas, up to the medieval architecture of Iglesias and the ruins of the Castle of Acquafredda near Siliqua, built in the mid 1200s by the Pisan family of the Counts of Gherardesca.
For those with a passion for manufacturing archaeology, the villages of Monteponi, San Giovanni and Campo Pisano, built in the 19th century to mine the metallurgical resources of the area, offer evocative sceneries, that today belong to the Sardinian Geo-mining Historical and Environmental Park. Other enchanting mining towns are found at Nebida and Masua, that still preserve remnants of the mining activity that took place up until a few decades ago, as in Buggerru, where the structures of the port used for the export of the extracted minerals are still found.
