The territory of the Goceano is most decidedly a mountainous area, bordering with Monte Acuto, Barbagia and Marghine, and characterised by the presence of the mountainous chain of the same name, that has its highest point on Monte Rasu, with its 1259 metres. The area is bathed by the river Tirso, by all of its confluent and numerous streams, such as the "Rio de sos Campaneddos", that during the winter overflow and form swamps which are lived in by varied species of aquatic birds.
The landscape is most variegated, enriched by a vegetation of oaks, cork oaks, holm oaks and olives, but also fruit trees, vines, and Mediterranean brush with lentisk, rockrose and myrtle; the territory is home to a rich fauna, constituted by partridges, hares, wild boars, foxes, deer and in the watercourses coots and ducks are to be found swimming. A visit is highly recommended to the forests Anela and Bono, in addition to the luxuriant forest of Burgos, where Sardinian horses are bred and from where you can leave to go on fascinating trails up Monte Rasu. There are also a number of springs, whose good quality and healthy waters are particularly appreciated. The springs of Torosile and "Sa funtana des'iscalas" are among the most abundant.
Goceano has been inhabited since ancient times, and has a particularly interesting Roman era attraction in the thermal baths of San Saturnine, in the municipality of Benetutti, while the castle of Burgos, built in the 12th century by order of the Judge Gonario di Torres, offers important testimony to the medieval age. Furthermore, craftsmanship makes the area characteristic, an example for all is the production of typical Sardinian carpets at Nule, unique in their kind.
