The Gerrei is an area occupied by a series of highlands and deep valleys, in which luxuriant Mediterranean brush grows, crossed by the river Flumendosa: here springs of fresh water bathe the valleys covered in corks, holm oaks, and olives. Numerous archaeological vestiges dot the territory: from the domus de janas in the area of Su Cranku to the complex of Pranu Muttedu near Goni, where megalithic circles immersed in the silence contain the mysteries of an ancient civilization. So is the memory of the rural civilization preserved in the ethnographical collections of the Museum S’omu de is ainas ("the house of the utensils") in Armungia, a town famous for having given birth to the writer and politician Emilio Lussu.
But Gerrei doesn't only offer archaeological or ethno-anthropological attractions: an important town that originated in Punic-Roman times, San Nicolò Gerrei, is in fact home to two beautiful modern sculptures dedicated to the art historian Salvatore Naitza. The lovers of innovative artistic expressions can admire the sculpture of Giovanni Campus in Piazza Lussu, while the work of Pinuccio Sciola stands in piazza Naitza. Therefore Campus and Sciola, two protagonists of the contemporary artistic panorama at international level, leave the signs of renewal in a town deeply rooted in the past.
