The region of the Campidano, a vast lowland of river origin, spreads from the southern portion of the Gulf of Oristano and crosses the island following an east-south diagonal, until embracing the Gulf of Cagliari.

The territory has a landscape rich in grain fields that, proceeding towards the south, are replaced by fragrant fenced orchards of eucalyptuses and cypresses. Dotted with pleasant towns that over the centuries have exploited its generous soils, the Campidano is rich in archaeological and historical-artistic finds, often found in the middle of the countryside. This is the case of the rural church of Santa Maria that stands to the east of the town of Uta, considered to be among the most beautiful Romanesque buildings of the whole Island.

In order to be carried away by the charm of the vivid colours and modern artistic expressions, a visit to the museum town of San Sperate is all you need, famous also for its renowned orchards. Here the external walls of the houses are decorated with polychromatic ‘murales’, that reflects the vivacious cultural ferments designed by Pinuccio Sciola, internationally famed artist, to whose support is also owed to the "International School of sculpture", a real hive of talent.

The island’s most important road artery passes through the centre of the territory, the "Carlo Felice", that connects Sardinia from north to south. The road passes, without going through, the towns that speckle the largest lowland on the island.

Characteristic for the housing typologies still present in thier historical centres, the towns of the Campidano preserve urban architecture typical of the courtyard houses built with raw earth bricks and with juniper beams and reeds for the ceilings.
