The legendary nucleus of wildest Sardinia, the region of the Barbagia owes its name to the Romans, that called it Barbaria because it was unconquerable. Today this is no longer the case: it allows visitors to conquer it by offering them special hospitality, but it first of all seduces them with its intense and fierce beauty. It stretches between the Nuorese and Goceano in the north and Gennargentu and Mandrolisai in the south, dividing itself among the areas of Ollolai, Belvì, Bitti and Seùlo.

Those are the areas of the Barbagia which are watched over by harsh mountains, strong gates from which the most remote traditions have never escaped and still today rumble, colour and excite. As have the secrets of a gastronomic art persisted over the centuries, that makes of their excellence an unbeatable weapon and immediately recognisable: in the cheeses, in the meats, in the cold meats as in the sweets and in the wines. In its territory, the Barbagia renders homage to art history, that is seen in the church of San Nicola di Ottana, an important moment of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia.
A territory rich in pathos, painted by the greatest artists of the Sardinian nineteen hundreds, some of which native like Mario Delitala of Orani, birthplace also of the great sculptor Costantino Nivola.
