The town of Iglesias, situated at the foot of Mount Marganai, has always had links to the mining industry which ever since prehistoric times, has exploited the underground riches of this area. In fact the region shows continuous signs of human settlement.
NebidaThe village of Nebida, a hamlet of Iglesias, rises high up on the splendid western Sardinian coast, in a panoramic position between the mountains and the sea. The area is historically linked to the exploitation of the mineral resources of a sub-region among the most ancient in Italy as regards geological formation.
MonteponiThe Monteponi area situated on the territory of Iglesias is the site of one of the most important mines in Italy where for centuries, raw argentiferous materials like galena and later, lead and zinc have been extracted from the soil.
San Giovanni MinieraThe San Giovanni area is located at the foot of a hill just outside Iglesias and since 1865 has been the site of an important mine opened by the Hungarian engineers, Keller. Near the inhabited centre we find Saint Barbara’s (Patron Saint of miners) cave, discovered during the drilling of a mineshaft and considered one of the oldest in Europe.
MasuaJust a few kilometres past Nebida, on the Provincial Road 83, we find the old mining village of Masua, once designed as a dwelling place for the workers in the mine with the same name. The area is rich with a number of interesting variations on the themes of mineral archaeology, of natural and geological distinctive features and of beaches and little bays of unequalled beauty, often far from the beaten track.
