Carbonia

Roma Square, Carbonia
Rationalist architecture and mines
The town of Carbonia officially came into existence in 1938, built in the space of just two years to provide housing for the workers from the nearby Sirai-Serbariu coalfield. Its name is clearly inspired by the principal economic activity.

Cortoghiana, Rome streetCortoghianaThe centre of Cortoghiana was planned in 1939 to meet the needs of the lignite mines and still preserves its original layout with a simple rationalist imprint, pivoting around a straight main road into which a number of perfectly perpendicular roads run.
The pit head, SerbariuSerbariuNowadays Serbariu is a hamlet of Carbonia but actually came into being in the course of the XVIII and XIX century from the merger of a number of scattered rural settlements (furriadroxius) and was raised to the status of commune in 1853. It was only in 1938 with the foundation of Carbonia that its territory, together with its 3000 inhabitants, was incorporated into this new town.
