In 1899, a film camera first pointed its lense at Sardinia during the visit by the Savoian Royalty. Since that time there have been numerous documentaries, films, diaries and television programmes revealing the island with its landscapes and traditions. In this section consits of the audiovisual heritage which is deemed to have particular historical value and where the regional bodies encourages cataloging, recording and digitisation of material which has mostly been taken from the archives of RAI, Istituto Luce, ESIT and Istituto Regionale Etnografico di Nuoro. Other important contributions are made available by the institutes, government bodies, local radio, television broadcasters and private companies.
