Carnival in Oristano

Carnival - A horseman during Sa Sartiglia, Oristano (photo: Andrea Meloni)

The Sartiglia is a unique and spectacular equestrian event. It takes place on the last Sunday and the last Tuesday of Carnival. The main figure is Su Componidori, a horseman who is dressed in a fascinating rite and becomes the king of the celebrations.

As the name suggests the Sartiglia is linked to fate and luck. The horsemen gallop through the narrow streets of the town centre and try to spear a silver star which is hung across their path with their swords. At the end of the race for the stars the event continues with horseback acrobatics. Divided into groups of three, the horsemen perform breathtaking feats and displays on horseback.
